Pittura della Casa

Many of these improvised compositions begin with physical explorations on bike or foot. Wherever I go I come across human detritus, from stolen cars to children’s toys. Fire frequently reforms materials from these finds into new shapes that fascinate and inspire these paintings. I will also look at detritus I create around the home and studio, as well as abandoned building and tip sites. These works are spawned in the Anthropocene and comment on the significance of the selected objects through the lens of unceded land and a planet in decline.

I am influenced by my Dadaist, Abstract Expressionist and Arte Povera heroes. The title of the collection is a nod to Arte Povera (Poor Art), an Italian art movement tending to make art in a sustainable manner, utilising commonplace, even found materials. Intuition is the line I choose to follow. The paintings veer between concerns of materiality and design, abstraction, still life, landscape, and figuration. The works on canvas are made from a wide range of materials, such as found charcoal, salvaged house paint, acrylic, spray paint and paint pens. There is always a story behind the materials and in the layers of paint and subject.
