Collective Mindstorm

Charcoal became my primary medium in 2020, during isolation. Confined to my studio and garden, I began drawing with charcoal from the garden bonfire. It was more than a creative outlet—it helped me process the anxiety and uncertainty of that time.

The bush charcoal I use now arrives with its own memory. It carries the imprint of fire—both natural and increasingly human-made.

I mostly work outdoors on flat ground, even out in the bush. I approach the surface from all directions—there is no fixed orientation, no up or down. Intuition becomes method. Material is added, erased, and rebuilt in fast, physical bursts.

Sustainability runs through my practice. With these works I have continued to use salvaged house paint, imbued with traces of shelter, aesthetic choice, and environmental cost.

Many of these works were part of “Collective Mindstorm”, my second solo show at Kolbusz Space, Perth.
